For tech — it feels like a large subset of SWEs don’t want to think about the “dirty” work of actually running a business and just want to write code — which is maybe an acceptable trait in a megacorp but IMO totally unacceptable for a startup

I’ve also seen managers try to distance their SWEs from the business side which I also think is the wrong approach

This is a great post. While I agree that every employee should have this information, as a product manager I should at least make sure my teams have this information.

Thanks Jeff, product managers absolutely need to know how the company makes money in order to better serve user needs

You would be surprised how many marketing divisions don't have such basic knowledge and lack of fundamental understanding of business model of the company they work in. Part of it is their fault, but there is also a lot of issues on management side, since they lack time and ability to properly communicate with the teams outside of sales.

But the moment you've mentions with the engineer is a great motivation for my work as well. After workshop sessions, when people faces brighten up and there is a great energy to do more and better.

Thanks for sharing this insight CJ!
